Mamaia is one of the most popular destinations for a beach holiday in Romania. It is on the Black Sea and is an archetypical seaside resort. There are beaches to relax on, nice food and lots of entertainment, including an amusement park.

Mamaia Beach Romania

As part of two of my trips to Romania, we scheduled a few days’ rest. This was in the seaside resort of Mamaia, to the north of Constanta. This is on the black sea in the east of Romania. We planned and hoped for a great beach holiday with some food and sightseeing mixed in, Mamaia delivered.

About Mamaia Beach Resort in Romania

Mamaia is Romania’s most popular resort near to Constanța city centre. The beach resort has almost no full-time residents, however, it is a very popular place during the summer. Mamaia is on a strip of land that is 5 miles long and 300 metres wide. The beach resort is between the Black Sea and Lake Siutghiol. Both bodies of water are great for activities, including water sports.

Peak holiday season is at its best between mid-June and early September. You can expect average daytime temperatures range between 25 and 30 °C. The water of the Black Sea beaches stays warm until mid-autumn. We’ve visited both before and after the peak season and found it fantastic.

Holiday Accommodation Near Mamaia Beach

There are lots of options for holiday homes in the Mamaia and the Black Sea resorts of Romania. This included hotels, apartments, campsites and a few guest houses. There were options to suit most tastes and budgets.

Alezzi Beach Resort

I’ve found the best way to find holiday homes throughout Romania to use either Booking.com or Airbnb. Booking is my preferred site as it’s easy to use. All you do is insert your dates and number of people, then search. You can also filter holiday accommodation by type and facilities. After perusing Booking.com, a budget room at Villa El Capitano ended up at the top of the list.

Vila El Capitano

Apartment in Mamaia Nord

We had rented a cheap apartment in Mamaia Nord from Booking.com. It cost less than £100 for 4 nights. Villa El Capitano was clean with new furniture and a great shower, which was much needed for travelling. We were not far away from a local shops, the beach and various bars or restaurants.

The accommodation at Villa El Capitano was very nice. It is a 3 story building with guest rooms on the upper two floors. We had a tour of a few rooms which were all very nice, typically they all had a double and a single in so useful for a small family or couple with extra space. Others had a double with a bunk bed, making them great for a group of 4 people.

Each room had a balcony with chairs to sit out on. Every room had an ensuite bathroom with a nice shower with hot water and some toiletries included. Other facilities included a functional shared kitchen, a coffee machine and a lovely garden to sit out. The garden had covered areas and loads of seats in a well-presented garden. Overall, this was a great place to stay for a holiday in Mamaia.

Attractions At Mamaia Holiday Resort

There are lots of things to see and do while on holiday in Mamaia, from beach activities to some traditional seaside fun.

Relax on Mamaia Nord Beach

Mamaia Nord Beach - Best Romanian Beach Holiday

Mamaia North is at the northern end of the area, primarily a beach resort. It has some very nice beaches, resort hotels and restaurants from around the globe. There were bars all the way up that managed their particular part of the beach, many with recliners, bar areas, and shade. In true RJ fashion, we visited a few as part of scouting the area. The beach was quiet at night and partook in some skinny dipping to cool off, walking back to the apartment, all in some very nice moonlight.

Have Fun at Mamaia Beach Resort

Mamaia is a holiday resort that reminded me of childhood visits to places like Blackpool and Weston super mare. It had theme parks, beaches, water parks, bars, restaurants, and an array of touristy shops. I enjoyed bar hopping and eating street food, including a nice Mexican style takeaway and Kurtos a cake with Hungarian origins. They cook these on a spit, which I had previously enjoyed on visits to Transylvania.

Ride The Cable Car

Cable Car

The cable car that connects each end of the resort is a must-do in my option. I went as the sun was setting and thoroughly enjoyed the view of the sunset over the lake.

Cable Car

You can see the whole resort from above, which was nice. The ride takes just under 10 minutes is a fun way to take the strain of the walk along the promenade.

Enjoy The Night Life

The whole vibe is a party atmosphere and can see why it is popular with all age groups for a summer holiday. There are lots of bars with music and some fantastic nightclubs at the resort. We found the beach bars to be pretty vibrant in the evenings and a great night out.

One of the most popular nightlife spots is Princess Summer Club, which is an offshoot of a top nightclub from Bucharest. We also found some of the smaller bars had live music and other entertainment.

Day Trip to Constanta

Constanta Casino

I had a few runs out to Constanta city during my stays to have a mooch and time away from the resort. Constanta is a very interesting city with history dating back to Roman times. The town is also a great place to enjoy eating out or doing some shopping at a fantastic mall.

Constanta Orthodox Cathedral

A highlight for me was seeing the impressive Constanta Casino that overlooks the sea. The art nouveau building is stunning and the nearby promenade is a great place to hang out. Other things to do include visiting the beautiful Constanta cathedral and various museums.

Visit Luna Park Funfair

Luna Park funfair Mamaia

Another fun thing to do in Mamaia is to visit Luna Park. Luna Park is a typical seaside funfair with lots of rides to keep you entertained. They have rides suitable for young children and some more lively options for adults.

Park

This includes the fairground classic dodgems which can get racy. They also have food stalls selling fast food and drinks at the site. Overall, Luna Park in Mamaia was a fun place to visit and enjoy the rides.

Explore The Seafront on a Electronic Scooter

Lime Mamaia

The seafront in Mamaia is very long and a fantastic walk. However, a fun way to get about quickly is to hike a lime, electronic scooter. These are particularly fun when it’s quiet and you can hit the throttle, like we did very early in the season before the crowds arrived. The area is a ghost town and closes down outside of the main summer holiday season.

Enjoy Watersports

jet ski

The sea and the lake that surround Mamaia lend itself to being a great destination for watersports. There are many companies that rent equipment or provide lessons. This includes kayaking, sailing, jet ski or hover boarding, to name a few. There are also places to learn scuba diving too. Overall, if you’re after an active time, Mamaia is great.

Have Fun in Bars or Restaurants

LUJO Beach Bar

We dined out at restaurants and enjoyed drinks in various bars lots while on holiday in Mamaia. Many of these were on Mamaia Beach and had sea views. There were others on the promenade that follows the coast. We enjoyed Greek, Romanian and Turkish meals out in the seaside resort. One of our favourite beach bars was LUJO Beach near or holiday accommodation.

Kamzo Beach

Kamzo beach

Obe of my favourite beaches to hang out was Kamzo beach. It’s a cool place that serves drinks, has comfy seats and the sand is well maintained. The staff were pretty friendly too, and they had decorated it nicely. In true Mamaia fashion, they had house music, AKA the sound of Mamaia playing on the speakers.

City Park Mall

I ventured out a few times to the resort of Mamaia, and to the City Park Mall to do some shopping, including sticking up on vape juice. I needed enough to last us for a few weeks as I expected, not being able to purchase any at our next destination. We also found super soakers in a toy shop here which was fun for the beach.

Constanta Mall

The Mall is rather nice to spend time and is a good place to avoid the heat of the hottest parts of the day. They have various places for refreshments and lots of shops. The mall also has some entertainment options, including a cinema.

See The Early and Late Sun on The Beach

Mamaia, like most other Black Sea resorts in Romania, is a wonderful place to get up early and enjoy the sunrise. The beach is a great place for this and as a bonus, it’s pretty quiet, too.

Sunset Mamaia

The beach and nearby lake are great for watching the sun do down too. However, my favourite place to watch the sunset is from the cable car that travels high above Mamaia.

Walk Around The Lakes

Mamaia Beach Resort is close to two epic lakes which are great for walking around or enjoying fun activities on the water. Lake Siutghiol is very close to the resort and surrounds most of the resort.

Tabacariei Lake - Promenade

For walking, I preferred to spend time at Lacul Tabacariei, which was quieter. There are lots of places to sit and enjoy the views, a church and some attractions lakeside.

Getting to Mamaia in Romania by Train

We arrived in Constanta train station after an epic journey from Cluj-Napoca traversing the country. Constanta train station, as with most stations in Romania, has a steam locomotive at the entrance. This is a pleasant touch and always good for a photo. The second trip was a shorter jaunt coming from Bucharest Nord on a direct train.

Steam Train

To get to the resort, it requires a taxi up the coast road. Due to us travelling with a suitcase and had a long journey beforehand. They varied taxi prices from driver to driver. Some were blatantly trying to pull a fast one. We opted for a friendly guy with one of the better prices and a nice-looking car. They also have Uber in Constanta for those that like simplicity.

Mamaia Beach Holiday Resort Review

I think Mamaia is a great resort to spend some time chilling or for people of all ages that like a beach holiday. Parts of the resorts are also party central and can see why it is the favourite holiday destination for Romanians. There seems to be something for everyone here, from nice food to some fun activities.

Beach Holidays Mamaia

The beach in the area is sandy and clean, with many places to sit. They extend for miles from Mamaia Sat all the way into Constanta. There are many private beaches attached to resort hotels, they are well maintained, with extra facilities like loungers and shades. There are also a few alternative destinations for Beach Holidays in Romania.

Black Sea Holidays

However, there was lots of construction work going on towards the north of the resort. I suspect this may be as we were there at the very end of the season. Also, is a good stopover destination for those visiting the Danube Delta. The next stop on the way to paradise was travelling to the city of Tulcea.
