Romania has been a country I have wanted to visit for years, the beautiful countryside was a particular attraction to me. 2019 was the year for me and have visited multiple times arriving by plane and train. Romanian food is diverse and delicious, it includes many meat dishes including the local favourite Mici.
Transylvania and The Danube Delta have been the places I have visited so far, but have a list I still wish to explore including seeing all of “The Seven Wonders of Romania”.
The country is very mountainous and there are some great walking adventures to enjoy. The Postavaral Massif Range in the centre of the country is a place with great views and has the lazy option of ascending in a cable car.
Romania is famous for its castles that include Brann Castle made famous for its links to Dracula. Corvin Castle to the north of the country is a special fairytale castle and is great fun and interesting to visit.
Places to visit in Romania
The Northern city of Cluj-Napoca was my first taste of Romania after flying in from Birmingham. A lovely city which has a great vibe about it, being a university city makes it that way IMO.
The Transylvania city of Brasov has been a crossroad on all of my visits to the country. A fantastic city that was where I spent a delightful Christmas.
Historic Centre of Sighisoara
Sighisoara is a historic citadel city in the heart of Transylvania, this really was a special place. There are loads of great examples of medieval architecture which is very vibrant in colour.
The city of Alba Iulia is another historic city that is enclosed in a medieval fortress. A real gem that has 2 cathedrals including the stunning Coronation Cathedral that was built to commemorate the Union of Transylvania with Romania.
The coastal city of Constanta is located on the black sea, the city has some great architecture, history and coastline. The centrepiece is the famous Art Nouveau casino building.
Mamaia the most popular seaside resort in the country and has the charm of typical of resorts around the world.
The Danube Delta
Danube Delta, a massive stunning nature reserve that is a UNESCO world heritage site. A remote place that comprises of a vast wilderness, small fishing villages and some Black Sea coastline. There are many boat tours of the area as well as many outdoor activities to enjoy, especially canoeing in the channels or bird watching.
The city of Tulcea is the administrative centre for the county of the same name in the Dobruja region of Romania. It is located on the banks of the Danube and is where many Delta Dunarii cruises and boat trips start.
Deva is a city in the west of Transylvania, Romania it is the capital city of Hunedoara County. The city is located on the Mures River, this seems to be a common theme for towns on the international railway line which seems to follow the river.
Romania is a diverse country with an interesting history dating back to Roman times. The food is great and very good value and people are friendly.
When the COVID-19 travel bans are lifted I’m keen to get hiking back in the Carpathian mountains and enjoy more views in a variety of seasons.
