chicken wings

Rebel Chicken

I have visited Rebel chicken in the Jewellery Quarter, Birmingham a few times now and I’m suitably impressed. Rebel ended up being my last meal out before the COVid lockdown, we were on-route when the lockdown was announced and just got in before it hit the fan across the nation.

They are an eatery that specialises in chicken and are pretty well known for their wings. Photos and a mention of this being a hidden gem by a tweet from @AlexPerrins mentioning hidden gems on his blog.

The Venue

Upstairs

This is an eclectic venue set over 2 floors, they have a courtyard and bar area with comfy seats downstairs. The courtyard has tables, chairs and even a sofa with a big teddy bear that my dog fell in love with on the first visit. Upstair is further seating for drinkers or diners with good sized tables, comfy chairs and a very nice vibe.

Dog Fiendly

Drink

Rebel has a comprehensive bar wich friendly staff and is an ideal place to go for a drink. For me, they have the added bonus of preferring dogs to people and are fully dog friendly. Hop House 13 has been my go-to drink here and really should try something new post lockdown as they had an array of options including draft Meantime IPA or lager.

Chicken Wings

I was very impressed with the foodie options on the menu but I had wings in my head, particularly their maple and bacon special that had been mentioned on social media the week before. Sadly this was an expired special so I opted for their mixed platter or wings. This was served on a metal tray with fries, sweetcorn and condiments.

The chicken wings were absolutely fantastic, the platter come in an array of flavours and I was hooked, especially to the Korean Barbeque and Jerk options. I had found my new go-to place for wings but they were being forced to temporarily close due to lockdown.

We opted to share the 1-kilo platter which was good value costing £12, we both left fully satisfied and the table had the dog drooling while he sat and watched with expectation. Rebel also sell wings in half kilo sizes too.

Other Food

Their menu all looks pretty special for my tastes and have some great options, what has caught my eye for a future meal out is;

  • The whole or half chicken that is marinated, steamed then cooked over coals.
  • Yard burger, a buttermilk chicken stacked in a burger served with chips and slaw.
  • “The Dirty Bird” which is a buttermilk chicken smothered in cheese and served again with fries and slaw.

Local

This is based in the heart of the Jewellery Quarter and very near to Warstone Cemetary which is a top spot for dog walking or sunset watching.

Brookfields Cemetery Jewellery Quarter

The Chamberlain Clock is just across the graveyard as are other JQ sites. For those that like to move venues, heading down Vyse/Newhall Street leads you to some other nice venues like; Rose Villa Arms, The Button Factory and 1000Trades.

Review

A nice and very friendly vibe was experienced on both visits in this eclectic eatery. The food we tried was delicious and highly recommend. I suspect my first post lockdown meal out could be here.
