The Jewellery Quarter & St Pauls Square in Birmingham

The Jewellery Quarter is my preference for hanging out, and it has some fantastic restaurants and independent bars, most of which are dog friendly. This area is home to some nice architecture, including churches and a picturesque heritage graveyard.

The area is the home of many independent businesses including bars, shops and, in particular, jewellers. It is a short walk from Birmingham city centre and is well worth the wander, especially to visit the museums and heritage sites. St Pauls Square in the Jewellery Quarter is Georgian and looks absolutely stunning.

Pubs, Bars & Restaurants in The Jewellery Quarter

One of the best things to do in the Jewellery Quarter is to enjoy a meal out or a drink at one of the area’s independent restaurants. It has a great selection of pubs and restaurants, making it a great place to drink or dine out. St Pauls Square is an excellent area to dine out with lot of options nearby.

1000 Trades a Neighbourhood Bar

The 1000 Trades is a cosy neighbourhood bar that serves some great food and booze options. They are on Frederick Street in a unique-looking venue. Their drinks are unique, with many organic options, including organic beers and even an organic prosecco. The bar is also pet friendly so you can enjoy a beer or dine out with your fury friend.

Although primarily a boutique hotel, Saint Paul’s House has a fantastic bar and restaurant. Saint Paul’s House is in the picturesque St. Paul’s Square and is a fantastic place to visit for a beer or food. They have a well-stocked bar with many options for quality beers, wines or cocktails. This is also a good place to take the laptop and work in a relaxed environment.

Cuccina Rustica is a very nice Italian restaurant on Ludgate Hill, a great place for date night or celebratory meal. They have a great menu featuring an array of Italian food including pizza and some delicious eat dishes. Some of my favourites include their lamb chops with veg and spicy sausage pasta.

The Pig & Tail a Vibrant Bar

If you like pretty bars that have great decor and art on the walls, The Pig & Tail is a good option. They have a great venue with vibrant colours, fantastic art and pleasant options for food and drink. They serve a great range of beers, including some interesting craft beer options.

For food they specialise in small plates and brunches at the weekend which are delicious and popular. Their full English includes rare breed pork sausage, streaky bacon, black pudding, roasted tomatoes, beans, fried egg and toast. I enjoy working from the Pig & Tail because of the comfortable seats, nice refreshments and overall ambience.

AR Bar & Gallery

On Frederick Street near to The Button Factory is AR Bar Gallery, a specialist tapas bar. AR Bar & Gallery is a great place to enjoy tapas and cocktails in a fantastic setting. They have antiques, fine art and paintings as the decor inside, thus making it a nice place to dine or drink out. AR Bar also has some outside seating, ideal for drinks on a sunny evening.

Arch 13 Bar and Connolly’s Wine

Connolly’s Wine and Arch 13 Bar is on Livery Street near to the entrance to Snow Hill Station. Connolly’s Wine is a wine merchant that sells a great selection of wines from around the world. They also stock some interesting beers from local brews to some more interesting continental options.

I particularly like the variety of beers they stock, including some German wheat beers, Belgian abbey beers and also some nice Cornish options. Arch 13 is the on-site wine bar that is a very nice venue to visit and ideal for a date night. They serve superb wines, obviously accompanied by a very interesting-looking menu. Their menu includes delights such as charcuterie or cheese boards.

Another Jewellery Quarter Italian restaurant on Ludgate Hill, Locanta. This is one of the most hospitable restaurants in the area. The restaurant is rustic in design inside and also has a pleasant terrace for seating on a warm day. Their staff are friendly and are very enthusiastic about their food and wines.

The food here is great, they have typical Italian cuisine, tapas options and also a daily specials board. Their tapas include delightful meatballs, calamari, olives and much more. Their pasta is nice, as is the pizza, but they also have a great range of meaty dishes.

They also have a good selection of Italian desserts including tiramisu Overall, this is one of the best Italian restaurants in the Jewellery Quarter

Damascena For Middle-Eastern Food & Coffee

Another popular choice by me for a lunchtime bite is Damascena, a Middle-Eastern eatery and coffee shop. You can also get a food delivery from Damascena via the Deliveroo app. The flavours here are absolutely delicious. Their stuffed vine leaves are a great starter or accompaniment.

Their chicken shawarma Arabiya is a very nice dish, as is the lamb version. It’s basically meat in flat bread with a side of salad and spicy potatoes. The menu has many options for meze so you can pick and mix. Fuul is also on the menu. A standout fuul I enjoyed was the broad bean/ fava bean Fuul Mahroos. Overall, a very interesting menu. Menu.

For lunchtime or breakfast sustenance, the Soda Bread Cafe at St Pauls Square is fantastic. They are my go to place for a brunch sandwich while on a dog walk in the Jewellery Quarter. The staff and owner are friendly and the Soda Bread Cafe serve great food options.

The Indian Brewery Restaurant

The Indian Brewery is a lovely restaurant in the area and serves delicious street food. They have a lovely dining area which is suitable for small or large groups. They also have an outside dining area, which is great on a summer day.

The Indian Brewery also brew their own beer, a great option to try is their Birmingham Lager. This is an unfiltered beer which tastes delicious and is great for a session. A highlight of their food menu is their Fat Naans, which come in many flavours and are rather filling.

The Rectory in St Pauls Square is a pleasant restaurant and bar, and a great place to dine out. They have some very nice raised seating in the bar and a friendly vibe. There are also some outside tables overlooking the church and a courtyard to the side, which is nicely shaded on a summer day.

The Queens Arms is a friendly traditional pub on Newhall Street. It is a nice place to relax and enjoy a pint or two. They have an outdoor smoking area with cinema-style seats. The pub also serves food, including a hearty Sunday lunch each week. Their bar snacks are great, which includes a fantastic scotch egg.

The Rose Villa Tavern is a great neighbourhood pub in the Jewellery Quarter that serves the usual pub drink offerings. It has a traditional boozer feel about it, with additional outside seating, which is great on a sunny day which overlooks the iconic Chamberlin Clock. The Button Factory in the Jewellery Quarter is a very nice bar on Frederic Street. They have a nice balcony to hang out on in the summer with splendid views of the area. The Button Factory has a very welcoming environment which provides the perfect sanctuary all day long. They are a multi-purpose venue where you can enjoy a coffee in the morning. The Actress & Bishop is a late night bar and live music venue on Ludgate Hill near to St Pauls Square. They have a nice big bar inside and a lovely terrace to sit on outside. They have a great selection of drinks including beers, shots and cocktails. The Actress & Bishop host a variety of live music events, pub quizzes and even an open mic night. This is one of the more lively places later in the evening in the Jewellery Quarter.

Burning Soul Brewery For Local Craft Beer

The Burning Soul Brewery is in Birmingham, near to the Jewellery Quarter. Burning Soul has a taproom that is open on a Friday or Saturday for you to enjoy some of their beers. They also offer brewery tours to visitors that are interested.

Their beer offerings include Pulling Down the Sun IPA, a 4.5% session IPA that is brewed with a combination of Idaho 7 and Citra hops. This is a great drink for when it’s sunny outside or in your soul. Their menu constantly develops to include new beers, so something new is often in the pipeline.

Pasta Di Piazza

Just along from St Paul’s Square is Pasta Di Piazza, another Italian restaurant in the jewellery Quarter. Pasta Di Piazza calls a beautiful Victorian red brick building with hanging baskets home. They have a lovely rustic dining room and it’s a nice place for a meal out.

Pasta Di Piazza has two menu options: the à la carte and the set meals. Menu items incluse antipasti, pizzas, risotto and pasta. They also serve platters with options like steak or veal Milanese. Overall, Pasta Di Piazza is a nice place to dine out especially their pasta dishes.

Things to See & What to Do in The Jewellery Quarter

The Jewellery Quarter of Birmingham has many things for visitors to see. This includes some tourist attractions to enjoy while exploring the area. These include some interesting buildings and other attractions.

Museum of the Jewellery Quarter

Museum of the Jewellery Quarter

The Museum of the Jewellery Quarter is a great visitor attraction in the area. The Museum tells the story of the 200-year-old Jewellery Quarter, which is considered the centre of the British Jewellery industry. They preserved the Smith & Pepper jewellery factory to create the museum when they closed their doors for good. The museum is like a time capsule of a historic jewellery maker, where you can see all the tools and methods used. You can visit to learn more.

BT Tower

The BT Tower is one of the most prominent features of the area’s skyline and is visible from most parts of the area. I took this from the platform of the Snow Hill train station.

Chamberlain Clock

Chamberlain Clock

The Chamberlain Clock is one of the iconic things to see in the Jewellery Quarter and is very nice to have in the area. The Chamberlain Clock and tower is an Edwardian and made from cast-iron. They erected it in 1903 to mark Joseph Chamberlain’s tour of South Africa between 26 December 1902 and 25 February 1903, after the Second Boer War.

Daffodils and dusk in St Pauls Square is a lovely place for an evening stroll on a dry evening. The area is nicely lit up and always a pleasure to visit. St Pauls’s Square is a fantastic place to sit out on a sunny day. There are also many restaurants and bars nearby to visit.

Warstone Lane & Keyhill Cemetery

There are two heritage cemeteries in the area, and both are lovely places to explore and even learn some history. They are also a fantastic place to sit, relax or reflect. The gatehouse to the Warstone Lane cemetery is rather special to see, much like the architecture of the area.

The Warstone Lane Cemetary is also a lovely place to explore. It is very tranquil and has beautiful surroundings. This is a great place for a walk or to sit and relax, and also one of the quieter open spaces. The grounds here are one of the nicer places to watch the sunset in Birmingham.

Visitors often come to visit the many specialist jewellers and jewellery makers in the area. There are specialists in gold, diamonds and other precious gems in the area, thus is a great place to visit if you are purchasing jewellery. Warstone lane and Vyse Street has an array of options to visit.

The area is also nice to visit when it snows. However, St Pauls Square seems to be the focal point of winter activity when the white stuff arrives.

A Matter of Opinion

The area has some interesting signage, this one on Livery Street says A Matter of Opinion, certainly food for thought when you see it.

Just off St Paul’s Square is a stature sitting on a ledge and distinctive message on the walls, “Compared to What”.

The Jewellery Quarter sometimes has visitors filming movies, from asking about these are mainly Bollywood style films filmed in the city. Fascinating to watch the set in passing, however sometimes the dog likes to bark at the sound guy, he has an aversion to booms.
