Sighisoara Travel Guide

Some information that I found handy to make a visit to Sighisoara’s top drawer.

Travel to Sighisoara

The city has bus or train services directly, too many of the larger towns and cities in Transylvania and Romania. This includes to Bucharest, Brasov, Cluj-Napoca, Sibiu and also Alba Iulia. From many of these places, there are connections to travel to international stations, including Vienna and Budapest. For this reason, it is a popular stop for Interrail Pass users.

Dog Sighisoara train station

Sighisoara has a small railway station with a cafe serving coffee and also beer. Note, the cafe only accepts cash, so be prepared. The railway station, as with many in Romania, had a steam train displayed for decoration.

On arrival, there were an abundance of taxis to take us to the historic centre. However, this is also walkable. Being so close to the railway network and its historical significance, Sighisoara is a great option for a train holiday destination.

Where To Dine Out or Enjoy Drinks

Hotel Sighișoara Tripe Soup

Trying the local Transylvanian cuisine and alcoholic beverages is a nice thing to do in any new place. In Romania, the soups are special and very different from soups made elsewhere. Mici is also a great snack to enjoy and is available in most restaurants served with local mustard.

I found that there were many places to eat out, including hotels, cafes, bars and restaurants. Many of these were dog friendly inside, however, most also had outside seating.

There are loads of options for places to stay in Sighisoara. This includes self-catering rooms, hotels and Airbnb options. Sighisoara has a Doubletree by Hilton hotel just outside the citadel walls. This hotel has magnificent views overlooking the river for those that like this chain.

Archway Sighisoara

Our apartment on the first visit was in a central location, part of a complex just off the main street. It had a big comfy bed and a functional bathroom, and all for less than £20. There are many options for hotels and other places to stay in Sighisoara on Booking.com.

Casa Barocă a Dog Friendly Pension

For another visit to Sighisoara during late autumn, we opted to stay in Casa Barocă. Casa Barocă is a dog friendly pension within the citadel, thus has a great location. The accommodation is rather nice with great facilities but its decor plays to the medieval theme of the city.

Checking in was painless. We collected the keys from the medieval restaurant opposite and the host was attentive. There were enough beds for three guests in the main room. There is also a separate room to hang out in or used to get the laptop out. The bathroom has a hot tub bath, which was one of our major attractions to Casa Barocă. Overall, our stay at Casa Barocă was great.

Casa Wagner Dog Friendly Hotel in Sighisoara

On a longer stay in Sighisoara, we stayed in the dog friendly Hotel Casa Wagner, a lovely hotel in the main square if the citadel. The room was in a courtyard, had nice beds and a big bathroom. Overall, our stay at Hotel Casa Wagner was great and felt very comfortable.

When Is Best To Visit?

Town Square Sighisoara

As Sighisoara is a popular place to visit and its UNESCO status, it can get busy. The weekend and summer are the busiest times. We have enjoyed visiting out of peak season in spring and autumn and found it to be pretty quiet. One thing I would recommend is staying overnight to enjoy the night time vibe of the old town area.
