Places To Visit in The Czech Republic & Things To Do

There are lots of nice places to visit and things to do in The Czech Republic. The country has many well preserved historic sites, including some UNESCO listed places to visit. Some of my favourite places to see have been the various castles and churches in the country.

Prague, its capital city is the most popular place to visit in the country, however there are lots to see beyond there. We found the Czech Republic fascinating and the top attractions were pretty special. They also have some rather interesting museums and galleries throughout the country.

I’ve visited a few places in the county and am keen to explore more because I have enjoyed every place visited so far. The Czech Republic has impressive cities and smaller places to visit in the countryside.

Prague the Capital

Prague is a beautiful place to visit and one of the more beautiful cities out there. It is a fantastic destination for a city break or a fun weekend away. The city has a multitude of options for things to see and do, including some breathtaking tourist attractions.

Prague is the capital city of the Czech Republic and is a great place to go with a dog. We found many dog friendly bars and restaurants and found these very hospitable. My preference was to dine out at traditional restaurants in Prague.

The Castle is a beautiful place that overlooks the rest of the city. It is also a UNESCO World Heritage Site, thus well worth spending time doing some sightseeing there. The Old Town Square is an iconic part of the city and a great place to sightsee.

The riverbank, Jewish Quarter, and Charles Bridge are also popular with visitors. Dog walking in the city is always a pleasure and a great opportunity to find some of the lesser known sights.

Cesky Krumlov is a beautiful town to visit and a great place to stay if travelling with a dog. It has some fantastic tourist attractions, thus lots of options for things to see and do. It is an idyllic place to visit for a day trip, or while backpacking in Europe. Cesky Krumlov has an interesting history, which is you can learn about in the town’s museums and at the castle.

Cesky Krumlov Castle is a great attraction for tourists to see; the highlight being its tower overlooking the old town area. They listed its town centre as a UNESCO World Heritage Site because of its well-preserved architecture.

The river and surrounding countryside is also great for hiking or a dog walkies. There are also lots of riverside restaurants serving Czech cuisine, including lots of fish from the river.

The city of Ceske Budejovice is the largest in the South Bohemia region of the Czech Republic. It is also the home of Budvar beer, a fantastic drink for beer lovers. There are lots of things to see and do here, especially seeing the colourful architecture and the main city square. There were towers to climb, cathedrals to visit and lovely scenery along the riverbanks.

It’s also a great place to dine out, especially in one of the many eateries in the main town square. The river is a great place for dog walking and sightseeing. There are a few boats on the river where you can dine out and enjoy the views. Overall, it’s a pleasant place to visit when touring the Czech Republic.

Things To Do in the Czech Republic

There are lots of fantastic things to do while visiting the country. We enjoyed visiting many of the top places of interest and fun experiences in the Czech Republic.

Prague Castle is a beautiful place to visit for a day out while in the city. The castle is a dominant feature of the city’s skyline and overlooks the Old Town, Lesser Town and the River Vltava.

The castle is a beautiful complex of fortifications, churches, gardens, and palaces. Its architecture covers a variety of styles, including gothic and Renaissance. The castle dates back to the 9th century, however; it has grown and changed lots since then. It’s an excellent place to walk around and has many interesting features, including its own vineyard.

Cesky Krumlov Castle is one of the largest castles in central Europe. It has over 40 buildings in the complex, including palaces. The castle has many courtyards and a massive garden, making it a fantastic place to mooch around with the camera.

The castle is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and attracts many tourists to the town. You can visit many of the outside areas for free or get a ticket to see inside and the tower.

One of the best things to do in the Czech Republic between seeing the amazing sights in to enjoy some local beer and food. The country is well known for its beers, particularly pilsner beer. The two most popular beers in the country are Pilsner Urquell and Budvar. Both are great drinks.

Czech cuisine is hearty, and delicious with lots of meat options, including lots of pork. The pork knuckles and knees are a great meal option and very filling. They usually serve these with bread, mustard and pickles.

One of the best churches to visit in the Czech Republic is St. Vitus Cathedral. St Vitus Cathedral is in the Prague castle complex and is an impressive gothic building. The cathedral is stunning on the outside and rather special to visit the inside. You can learn lots of Czech history when visiting and see some beautiful religious artefacts.

In the capital, a fantastic place to visit is Old Town Square. Beautiful architecture surrounds the square and there are many things to see. The gothic churches and towers certainly add to the appearance, especially at sunrise.

There are also some museums or galleries to see in the area. Old Town square is also a scenic place to dine out when in Praha and enjoy some traditional Czech food.

One of the fun things to do in the Czech Republic is one of many medieval themed banquets. There are various options in the cities of the country to choose from and we plumped for the Medieval Tavern in the capital. This was a fun thing to do and involved entertainment, lots of Czech beer, and food. The evening out was one of our favourite nights out in the city.

River Vltava

The River Vltava is the major river that runs through Prague and is quite the sight. It is the longest river in the Czech Republic and is 270 miles long. It runs from Černá Hora in the Bohemian Forest and ends where it meets the River Elbe.

The Vltava river runs through some lovely places on its way to Prague, including Cesky Krumlov and Ceske Budejovice. In the capital, there are 18 bridges that cross the river, including the iconic Charles Bridge. A cool place to hang out in the capital is Archers Island, which hosts various events. As with most rivers, there are many things to do in the water. This includes boat trips and watersports, including SUP and whitewater rafting.

The Charles Bridge is an iconic gothic bridge in the Czech capital that crosses the River Vltava. It is a beautiful bridge to have a mooch around and see all of its amazing features. The bridge is free to see and is one of many must see tourist attractions in Prague. Some features of the bridge to look out for include the towers at either end and the statues on the edges.

They started building the medieval stone bridge in 1357 under the guidance of King Charles IV, its namesake. The bridge took a while to build and eventually they finished it in the early 15th century. On the bridge there are three impressive towers, two at the lesser town end and one at the old town end.

The bridge has 30 baroque statues on either side of the walkway, which are rather interesting to see. They created the statues in around 1700, however, those on the bridge are now replicas.

People refer to the capital of the Czech Republic as the city of spires, because it has numerous churches and towers. One of my favourite things to do in the city is to see or climb the various medieval towers. The powder tower and the three on the Charles bridge are pretty special. You can visit inside these to learn more and see the views from the top. The Lesser Town Tower is pretty special for the views of the bridge and the castle.

Throughout the Czech Republic, some of the interesting places to visit are churches. There are many churches throughout the country that they built in various styles of architecture. There are lots of Baroque and Gothic churches throughout and you can visit lots of these for free.

We’ve visited churches in every place we’ve visited so far, including some epic cathedrals. A really chilled and fascinating church I visited was Loreto, a pilgrimage site. The churches of the old town area are beautiful places to visit or see from the outside. St Nicholas Church in Prague was also pretty special inside.

Another place to enjoy the great outdoors is the South Bohemia Countryside. The South Bohemia Countryside is the drainage basin for the river Vltava and has lots of forests to explore. You can find lots of hiking trails in the area, including routes on Komoot. South Bohemia has many picturesque towns and villages to visit too.

Is The Czech Republic Dog Friendly?

The country is one of the more dog friendly countries that I have visited, thus I have visited a few times. We had no problem finding options for pet friendly places to stay on our visits. We stayed in a few dog friendly backpacker hostels and pensions while in the country. Not that if staying with a pet, you usually have to book a private hostel room.

Restaurant and bars more often than not were accommodating to travellers with dogs. Some even offering fuss, a bowl of dog water and sometimes a treat for the dog. Prague was enjoyable to visit with the dog and there were lots of options for us. Cesky Krumlov was the same and there were many places we dined out at with Henry.

Travelling to the Czech Republic with a dog requires extra paperwork, depending where you are arriving from. You either need an EU issued pet passport which is checked when entering the Schengen area. For not EU residents, you need the “Animal Health Certificate”.

Is The Czech Republic Worth Visiting?

We have really enjoyed visiting the Czech Republic and found it a beautiful place. There are lots of well preserved historic buildings to see and many things to do. The beer and food out in bars and restaurants suited our tastes and were delicious. As a bonus, we found everywhere we visited the be pretty dog friendly.

We enjoyed some longer stays and found adulting easy including visiting laundrettes. The Czech Republic is certainly a country we will revisit and explore further. Karlovy Vary, Brno and Ostrava are very much on our Czech bucket list.
