Welcome to RJOnTour, a travel blog about places I have visited in the UK and Europe, mostly with my wife, and dog Henry. We are currently residing abroad while doing some long trips from our new home base in Romania. Most of our travel is by public transport, predominantly on the trains of Europe.
Most of my travel blog content is about places I’ve visited in the UK and Europe. This includes blog posts about places we’ve visited, local beer, food and enjoyable attractions.
Countries Covered By My Dog Travel Blog
Travel guides about various countries in Europe that we have enjoyed visiting with Henry, our dog.
Austria
Austria is a fascinating country to visit, especially its capital, Vienna. Vienna has lots of nice palaces, churches and other sights to see. Another top thing to do is to visit Prater Amusement Park.
Croatia
Croatia is a beautiful country with excellent food, including seafood. The capital Zagreb is nice as is the 2nd city Split. The Croatian Islands are lovely for a seaside holiday, including the delightful Mali Losinj.
Czech Republic
The Czech Republic is a fascinating country with excellent beer and pubs. The capital, Prague, has many interesting sights. Cesky Krumlov in Bohemia is also a fantastic place to visit.
Netherlands
The Netherlands is a pleasant country to visit and as a bonus has dog friendly ferries from the UK. We visited Maastricht, a beautiful city in the south and The Hague in the north. I enjoyed visiting both. We definitely have unfinished business here, including the capital, Amsterdam.
Romania
My new home country, Romania, has many travel blog posts about it. This includes about the capital Bucharest. My guides also cover places in Transylvania, including Brasov and Cluj-Napoca. Also featured are the wild Danube Delta and the seaside, including Mamaia and Constanta.
Slovakia
Slovakia is a country I enjoy visiting, especially the capital Bratislava. We’ve visited a few times and really enjoyed the castle. A quirky place down the Danube is the Courtyard of Europe. To food and beer are good in Slovakia and it’s quite a good value place to dine out if you eat locally.
Slovenia
Slovenia is a picturesque country with beautiful cities and has epic countryside. The countryside near Lake Bled is wonderful, especially for dog walks. The pretty capital, Ljubljana, is also well worth visiting. Other nice places featured on my travel blog include Celje, Maribor and Ptuj.
UK
An extensive section of my travel blog, including my former homes in London, Gloucestershire and Birmingham. I cover quite a few topics, including dog friendly guides. There are also suggestions for city breaks and the Cornwall coast.
Bucketlist For 2024
There are lots more places in Europe to explore with the dog and that will continue in 2024. I will focus lots around Romania with a long break in the Croatian Islands. I’m hoping to visit Serbia, Montenegro, Poland and Bosnia as new places.
Travel Blog Topics
Local Food
I love cooking and eating out, especially trying local food options. For example, the Choucroute in Kaysersberg washed down with some local wine. However, my favourite meal travelling was fruit de mer in Dieppe. The food in Bologna was also pretty special too.
Beer O’clock
I’m partial to a few local beers with the dog wherever we end up and usually try to enjoy local if possible. I’ve really enjoyed the beers when travelling, including in the beer halls of Germany and bars of Prague. The Croatian beers have also been great too.
Hiking Adventures With A Dog
Hiking and dog walking usually are the same thing for me and Henry really enjoys his exercise, with breaks at pubs or viewpoints along the way. This includes many hikes in the Carpathian mountains, hiking in the Forest of Dean and AONBs of England.
Dog Friendly Travel
Travelling with a dog means one thing you need to find as many dog friendly things as possible. This starts with pet friendly accommodation to stay and a place for Henry to relax while we see inside some attractions. We also aim to visit dog friendly bars and restaurants where possible.
Historical Buildings
I love to visit historical buildings, especially castles and religious places. Every destination we choose usually has some grand architecture and an interesting back story. Highlights include Prague Castle, Rouen Cathedral and the riverfront in Budapest. The beautiful buildings of the Alsace in France and the castles of Transylvania were very special too.
Train Travel With A Dog
Travelling by train is by far my travel method of choice with the dog. It is so much more comfortable than any form of travel and apparently is good for the environment too. We are partial to night trains in Romania, however, with daytime trains, we like to change every 2-3 hours to exercise the dog. Europe has many Interrail destinations to reach by rail.
Festive Markets
Festive markets are a great time to visit somewhere. This includes at Christmas or Easter. In the UK, London has fantastic Christmas lights to see. We also enjoyed various Christmas markets in Vienna and the famous Christkindlesmarkt in Nuremberg. Locally now, there are various Christmas markets in Romania.
Food Markets
Local food markets are an excellent place to buy ingredients to cook. This certainly helps with budget travelling and is a fun experience too. The fish markets in Croatia are top drawer for seafood. I also really enjoyed the food markets in Bulgaria while slow travelling. Dieppe Market in France also impressed me.
Travel Kit
I’ve also posted a few reviews of kit I’ve used while travelling. This includes backpacks, a tent and some walking shoes. Popular reviews include my Shadow Nightfall Tent, a North Face day bag and large OEX rucksack.
Seaside
The seaside is a great place to visit for me and I find the coast a great way to relax. The Croatian coast is wonderful and I really enjoy visiting. In the UK, special places by the sea include Polperro, Fowey, Looe and the English Riviera.
Europe Travel Diaries
My travel blog roundups since I started them. These are diary format of how each year went rather than travel guides.
2020 Restrictions & Fun
2020 was the year of travel and other restrictions, so post March, things got creative. However, the travel year started with snow-covered mountains in Romania, then trains across Europe, then a ferry to the UK.
2021 Leaving UK
An epic year started with lockdowns, then getting married at Gretna Green in Scotland. Then onwards for a 2 month Interrail trip in Europe heading towards Romania for winter.
2022 Discovering…
A year of full time travelling with a dog throughout Europe. This included first time visits to Croatia and Slovenia. We spent more time in Croatia than in any other country in 2023. We also enjoyed a month in Italy.
2023 Slow Travel
More slow travel in central and southeastern Europe. Bulgaria was a new country for us to visit and enjoyed nearly 3 months of exploring. We also enjoyed central Europe, including 5 weeks in the Croatian Islands.
2024 Travel
2024 will be embracing my new country of residence, Romania, with various trips with the dog mixed in for good measure.

Cute pooch! What a cool-looking blog and life of travel, too. Traveling with your best furry friend is a wonderful way to experience the world. We do it a bit differently as my wife and I house sit all over the globe. We care for different pets abroad and at home in the US, too. Keep up the good blogging work.
Ryan
Loving your blog. I also have a cavalier named Rocky. He is 3 years old. We like in the UK and drove with him to the dolomites in Italy last year during summer. It was great. Doing the same this year, but stopping in different places on the way back. Great tips, thank you
