A Night Out With A Difference – The Big Birmingham Bake

I was Invited by @thebig_bakes to try out a new experience on Friday evening “The Big Birmingham Bake”. With my love of cooking and food I decided this would be right up my street.

The Big Birmingham Bake is located in Digbeth Birmingham at the site were we Enjoyed Beer Central Festival last summer.

The concept is simple pairs compete to cook the tastiest and most aesthetic versions of the days cakes, with a winner announced at the end. Our night was doughnuts and discovered we could make endless flavours and designs.

On arrival we were offered drinks to enjoy in the luxury waiting area which had sofas, comfy chairs and heating. There were many options for drinks, tonight we enjoyed coffee and some chilled water, other participants enjoyed beers and wines.

The venue was installed with many workstations for each of the teams, all with a hob, cooker, mixer and ingredients already weighed out ready to compete.

Emma the host and her helpers introduced the concept and provided assistance throughout the process and made the whole even feel fun.

After the intro the bake started by following the method sheets provided, these were clear and easy to understand. Dough was made and put in trays in the oven to bake until ready, the ring versions were ready before the filled doughnuts so put them back in for a few minutes.

While cooking we cooked the filing for the doughnuts ins pan on the hob, to the standard will we could add colour and flavours to this. We chose the theme Banana-Colada a twist on Pina Colada which incorporated banana, rum and some nutty flavours. For the decoration we chose a bold pink colour, with rose cold glaze and covered in snowflakes to add some crunch and delicacy.

Time flew buy during the creation phase and I no time it was time to display our creations, these were put on cake stands ready for judging. The Judges tasted and comment on all aspects of the bakes then had a discussion to announce 1st, 2nd and 3rd prizes. I thought everyone’s looked great and we were all winners for having fun.

We were delighted to be announced winners for our doughnuts and even more delighted with the prize of a cake knife each. We even got to take home the 11 remaining doughnuts all boxed up in branded cake boxes.

I would recommend The Big Birmingham Bake for couples, friend and groups as well as for team building events. They also have a place in London doing similar.
